This problem began sprouting up about 2 weeks ago (right around the time that it began getting quite cold here in Canada). The electrical warning light began flickering on intermittently while the car was being driven, but seemed to consistenly happen more often when the engine rpms were low (at idle, coasting, etc). I replaced the battery as a matter of course since it had not been replaced in the 4 years that I've owned the car. The problem has continued and the electrical light is now constantly on when the car is driven. My only guess now is that there's a problem with the alternator, but in my experience alternators die a quick death and not a prolonged one like this. Could there simply be a belt/bearing issue? Any other ideas?

Check the wires at the alternator
use a volt meter and check charging volts
