97 Mercury rubbing noise from back end

The noise is not consistent, but only happens when I am NOT braking. It's a rythmic rubbing noise (high pitched) that accelerates as the car accelerates. It is louder at lower speeds and either goes away or quiets down at higher speeds.

I had the brakes replaced, thinking that was the problem, but the noise persists. I was told by a mechanic that the problem could be bad bearings, but I haven't heard any grinding noises. What do I do?

Planning a long trip this weekend and I don't want the car to break down on me. :?:

replace the bearings there is not to much else it could be based on your description.
