1977 Other Mercury Models V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 1977 Mercury Comet with a 302 V8. Yesterday, while I was driving home, it died at a stop sign. Today, I tried to start it (while a friend was listening to it) and we heard a pop while it was cranking. What could the problem be?

carb problems, distributor problem, or timing chain problem. first check for spark on all cylinders and make sure dist cap and rotor are not wet inside
