Air Conditioning problem
1998 Mercury Mystique 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 100 T miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
A/C cools well. System functions normally at idle and speeds below 30 mph whether engine is cold or warmed up. Problem: At speeds in access of 40 mph, after about 10 minutes of operation, with A/C max on, a strong burning smell (not A/C clutch or fluid smell) fills the cabin. It smells electrical or like a wire melting, but nothing appears to stop functioning. When A/C switch is turned off and fan is still on high, the smell slowly goes away. It does not appear to be in the dash switches (they never overhead to the touch) or the blower motor (which functions well in vent or heater mode). Please advise.

Try running AC in the recirculation mode ie. no outside air. If odor goes away then you might be picking up from engine compartment.
