1995 Mercury Mystique Remvoing the Drive shaft

They actually make a tool that works like a slide hammer that has an adapter to reach the inboard joint (near the trans) and you pop it out. If you can't pry on it then this tool may be needed you might check to see if the parts stores around rent this or a rental place. The adapter to this tool looks kinda like a horse shoe with a place to thread in the slide hammer tool. Hope this helps

Sounds like you are just about there. I have attached a few pics for you. They use a special tools, step 7 below. Looks like you need come up with something similar. You might also check Auto Zone or O'Reilly's. They may have a tool you can use under the loan a tool program. I also have attached a few installation notes for you. My suggestion which you probably already know, since it is a 1995, I would consider replacing the seals while there although that drivers side may be a bear. You may consider getting a metal, threaded dowel rod, if you have a large enough crow's foot that fits around the axle, then bolt that to the bottom of the dowel rod and use that to pry or put something on the other end that would act like the slide hammer.
