2005 Mercury Mountaineer GAS GAUGE

I was filling up my car the other day and afterwards I noticed the gas gauge appeared to be stuck around the 1/4 tank mark. I stopped the engine, waited a couple minutes and started the car to see if it would register to the full mark --- no luck. I noticed after stopping and starting the car several times that the gas gauge needle moves to the left when all other gauges in the cluster move to the right as they normally do. I live in Chicago where the temperature has been around 10-16 degrees F, but that shouldn't have any bearing on my gas gauge operation. I was thinking either a defective gas tank float or sending unit. Any help would be appreciated and please let me know if this is something I can fix myself.

Did you leave the key in the on position while filling up? If so, it will gradually register full after several drive cycles. Ford recommends not to leave the key on because of the way the fuel tank pickup registers with the computer. If you did not leave the key on and it is doing this then you may have either a bad instrument cluster or a bad fuel sending unit. Hope this helps.
