Noises problem
2000 Mercury Mountaineer Four Wheel Drive 146000 miles

my suv makes a loud humming noise,the more i accelerate the louder it gets, also when i put it in reverse and start to bac up its like something is grabing it trying to hold it bac, a mechanic told me it was my differential but i want a 2nd opinion before i spend alot of money

Have you changed your differential fluid at some point during the 146,000 miles driven?
If you have not... I would do a flush and fill.

If the problem persists then something needs to be replaced gear wise.

I hope it is just a flush and fill.
If you have a limited slip differential which I am quite sure you do, make sure you add the adhesive additive in the "rear" only.
