dash lighting

I have a 96 Mercury Grand Marquis LS, 125,000 miles. A few days ago I was driving in the rain and decided to turn my headlights on, when I did all my dash lights went off. I couldn't see my speed or nothing else. As long as I don't turn my lights on, the dash lighting works fine. Could you tell me what could be wrong?

when you cut the headlights on, the dash lights will be dimmer then if you didn't have the headlights on. i would make sure that the dimmer switch is not turned down. look there first.
