When replacing the alternator on 1986 Merc Lynx, do you need to replace solenoid at the same time?

no, the solenoid is for starting

Thanx smokinfloyd. I was told by a mechanic that you always needed to replace the solenoid-by the battery not the firewall everytime I replaced the alternator.

well its not neccesary, even though the solenoid is only like 10 bucks
