check engine light

Hi,
I have a 2000 mercury cougar 120.000 v6
anyhow thanx for the suggestions on my car for the electrical problem. Also i noticed the gas cap wasnt on tight after the check engine light came on my question is what do you have to do to shut the check engine light off so I can see if that is what caused it to come on to begin with ?
Does it have to be done by a mechanic or is it something that can be done at home ? thanx Sue Taake

a scanner with OBD II capability..know how to read the system and what code to go up the tree is what a mechanic do....never heard of turn out the chk engine lites and find causes...it average about 5 years for a beginner to this diagnostic level in auto repair field.....wish i can teach our lube techs to do diagnostic overnite....
