My 2000 2.5L V6 cougar suddenly has no reverse. No warning of a potential problem. Parked it in the driveway as usual and when I tried to back it out it does not reverse.

Back up lights come on, fluid is fine, but no reverse movement.

Goes forward with no problem!

Suggestions of what this might be would be and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

This is going to be tough to diagnose without a scantool. First step is to pull codes from the computer to give a possible troubleshooting tree that is more precise. Although no codes may be present anyways.

Thes more simple things to check is the connector for the transaxle harness and the connector at the pcm for an abnormalites..corossion, loosness, etc. Then check for continuity. after that, you pretty much need a scanner.

Unfortunately everything checked so far appears to be in order.

Did find out through that Reverse is not totally gone. When the car is raised it will slowly spin the tires backward but just a touch of my hand will stop them. Not that it helps at all.

Wondering if I can chance taking the car to work and back the next two days as long as I park where I don't have to use reverse or if this will in all likelyhood damage the transmsission more?

HArd to say, but I don't think there will be further damage by driving it. Without any codes or a scanner this is tough. It may be a PCM problem, a valve problem internal and so forth.

Can you give me a range of what it might cost to have my tranny rebuilt?

Thank you.

I really can't as it would be putting an incorrect figure in your head becasue of variables.

What I strongly recommend is getting a jasper rebuilt transmission..good warranty and excellent quality.
