2000 Mercury Cougar Left Axle

I took the axle out of the left side to get it checked. I also changed the wheel bearings. I am now tyrying to put the axle back in and for the life of me I cannot get it to seat all the way in the transmission. Any pictures or help would be oh so grateful. Or maybe soemone can tell me the proper procedurte to do this job. To take it out I had to pry it from the tranny. But I do nto knwo how to pry it back in. Thanks in advance.

Hello and thanks for the donation! You were supposed to use special service tools to remove your vehicle's axle...I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't damaged something by "prying" it out without the tool. Below are the proper replacement procedures for the left axle, read over them and let me know if you need further assistance.

I followed the procedure froma nother source for removing the axle. it came out easily it is getting it back in that is the problem. I am told to make sure the rin atthe end of the shaft is on the bottom with the opening in the ring pointed down. but no matter what I do it will not go all of the way in. I took a picture of the inside of trnany where axle goes and it appears there is a spot on the inner spline gear tyhat is different from the axle shft almost like a guide of some kind but the axle shaft has all regular spilnes. Any idea. evn this special tool you show in picture does nto really detail how you get the axle back into the proper place. help is greatly needed

You will most likely need to use a rubber headed mallet or similar tool to help drive it back in. This should help seating the inner CV-joint into the differential side gear. Then insert the stub shaft into the wheel hub and tighten the hub nut to 246 ft. lbs.
