Noises problem
1999 Mercury Cougar Front Wheel Drive Automatic 123000 miles

My Cougar began having intermittant problems starting and made a loud grinding noise at those times. I took it to a mechanic and he confirmed the starter was bad and replaced it. Cost was $450. When I got it home, it still had the same problem so I took it back. This time he told me that the bad starter had damaged the flywheel, and cost to repair that would be another $1,100. Had I know this to begin with I would not have had the repairs made as this car is barely worth $2,500. My question - shouldn't he have know to check the flywheel to begin with given that its function is directly related to the starter?

Yes, a good repair shop would have checked the flywheel during the replacement of the starter. Sounds like they were in a hurry to get your vehicle out of their garage or to get your green into their wallets.
