Transmission problem
1999 Mercury Cougar 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

My friend has a 1999 cougar. The shift lever will not go to neutral or park. Happened suddenly.

So is it stuck in gear? mean shifter physicaly not move ? are you appling brake? if yes do brake lights work?

when I apply the brake the brake lights come on but the shifter will not go into neutral, reverse, or park.
The shifter does however move through Drive, 1,and2. Thanks

Think problem is with Transmission Range Sensor to confirm trans will need scanning. Will key come out of ignition?
