i have a 99 cougar, 3 months ago i was having very low horse power issues, i was told to use seafoam, the horse power got worse and the car felt like it did not want to go at all. I ran the car until it was on E and changed the Fuel Filter immediately . The car felt like it was "puttering" very slightly. (you would not feel it unless you know how your own car runs). I was told to change the spark plugs. Did just that but did not change the wires. Then ran OK for a while, now the car is having a stronger "putter" (still not enough for anyone else to feel but me), it is also vibrating when idling and it gets worse when doing about 50 to 60mph.
A friend driving behind me also said my car smelled funny when they was following me. I also noticed smoke coming out of the exhaust that does not really look like black smoke. I thought it was just because it was cold outside but now it is warming up here in FL the smoke is still there.
There is also no check engine light on, but my anti freeze light comes on even though it is full. Once the car warms up and i turn it off and turn it back on the light no longer stays on.
