Engine Mechanical problem
1995 Mercury Cougar Two Wheel Drive Automatic 149000 miles

I don't know if this question has been thoroughly answered but any help would be very appreciated since I am at a complete loss. I have read other people's questions and answers related somewhat to my question, but I'm not sure if I totally have the solution narrowed down just yet. I just bought a 95 cougar and the car idles fine, runs fine when started. The problem is, when you go to accelerate in park, or even any other gear for that matter, it goes up to 2,000rpm and no further, and when the rpm's are going up, it seems to hesitate and run rough as it ascends to 2,000. I have changed the fuel filter, and the check engine light doesn't come on. The car has brand new plugs and wires, and the air filter is clean. A buddy of mine and I checked the injectors for clogs and no clogs seem evident. Previously, we ran mass air flow sensor cleaner in the throttle body and it seemed to run even better. Upon starting it today, it ran for about 5 seconds and died... and now is running worse than before. I've been told it might be the cat converters. Perhaps a fuel problem? I dunno, I'm at a loss.
