I just bought a 1992 XR2 in Ohio with 8900 actual miles and EVERYTHING original, except the battery. While driving it back to Idaho, I noticed the operating temperature was running at about the 7/8 hot level. I have read that this is fairly normal for this model, but is there anything that can be done to bring the temperature back down to a more moderate level?

it probobly has 192 degree thermostat whitch is oem but you can use 180 degree thermostat in it also make sure your radiator cooling fan is turning on it should turn on about 195 degrees and please let me know what you come up with as for the fan

The fan will come on when I am idling at a stopsign for a minute or two - the needle of the gauge is microns away from the red-zone at that point. Is it possible that the gauge is reading wrong too?

ok then i would put a 180 degree thermostat in and does this car have one fan or two if one I think autozone sells the opptional two fan I also would change to it and yes that car and the taurus runs hot also change the temp sensor

I have been the owner of a 91 XR2 since 2000. I have also talked and cooresponded with a number of Capri owners. The temperature always reads high and the oil pressure low on these cars. Seems to be a defect of the breed. I once read somewhere that cleaning the engine ground strap would help. I haven't tried it.

The car specifically states that it has to have a special radiator fluid. First flush the radiator then change the fluid to the correct kind. You might want to change the thermostat. You have to take out the thermostat to flush the radiator anyhow.
