The reverse and drive gears work on my 1985 MB 500sel, but the forward gears do not shift. Does this mean I need a new transmission?

Hi there,
Check the oil level first, but there is not much else you can do, Have the transmission tested by a transmission work shop, I think that this transmission still used a vacuum modulator, if this is faulty i will cause a gear change problem, Can you select gears manually, Start in 1st and shift up ok, if so the basic power train is ok, so that is an advantage.
