Engine Mechanical problem
1998 Mercedes Benz C230 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

While driving car, power is gone - steering locks, no acceleration when gas pedal is pushed) Nothing happens (noise, shake, etc) to indicate problem is going to occur. This is the second time this has happened - the first time I thought maybe there was air in the fuel line (I don't know why I thought that except that the car just stopped in the middle of traffic for no reason)

This is more a computer failure than a mechanical issue. I would suspect your ME-SFI which is basically the brain of your vehicles powertrain. If the processor shuts down the vehicle will, like you said, just shut off with no warning or indication of issue. This is something you are going to want to get diagnosed at a good shop or the dealer, as chasing this isssue may get expensive if you don't have a knowledgable tech working on this.
