Hello, I am going to buy a used car 2008 or 2009 one of the Mercedes-Benz B170, B180 Or B200.
They are not hybrid, neither they are electric cars (As far as I know).

Someone suddenly told me as an advice: "Oh man, do not buy Mercedes B170 because it has a permanent problems related to the gear, people face problems in the gear, and after they are costed to buy and replace the gear for over than $400.00 USD, still after three or four months again the gear is damaged, so they keep being in this cycle until they decide to give up the car, so do not buy that car".

Now this "advice"' broke my plan (at least temporarily) until somebody there have any of such model (B170, B180 or B200) to tell me their experience about it, if what is mentioned in the advice is correct or not about the gear!

Also, I am concern about the fuel consumption as I had bad experience in the past about another car (Nissan) and I do not want to have such bad experience repeated again when I buy another one instead.

Please help. I seek your honest review, opinion and experience about it. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Can you please let us know which gear we are talking about do you mean the transmission or differential?

I like the low miles on the car and all cars have problems. I have not heard of any inherent problems with those cars.

Please let us know.

Cheers, Ken

Hello Ken, how are you?
Thanks for your response.
Well, I am not quite sure of what does "gear problems" that man meant, but I guess this is the transmission, as he said it causes headache to all owners of that car (Mercedes-Benz B170, B180 Or B200), especially if the car is used, and this is the reason that those owners give up and sell these cars because even if they change that gear, after four or five months again it gets damaged and they need to change it again!
I tried to search on the internet, but no one touches this point, on the contrary they show appreciation to such car, and I am afraid to believe either the positive or the negative.
but now I have a question: Do you encourage me to buy 2008/2009 Mercedes-Benz B170, B180 Or B200? or none of them?
I asked someone who was working in Mercedes-Benz company in another country, and he was clueless about this problem, but he said in generally B-Class cars in Mercedes are weak cars, especially the old ones, but he does not know about the gear problem.
So Ken, what do you advise me?
Some people here tell me not to have doubts and go ahead and buy one of B-Class, and some other people tell me to avoid that unknown risk and buy another car like Toyota Prius because I care for the fuel consumption, but here comes another problem, that people who tried Toyota Prius said it is a weak car, not strong, but it is very economic. I am just confused, I wanted Mercedes for the strength of its body and the name, in the same time I chose B-Class because the Good style and economic engine, so it - as I assumed - combines the all together (Trusted brand name strong car, and economic in fuel consumption), while Toyota Prius is weak.
But now after what that man told me about Mercedes B-Class cars, I am disappointed and confused.

So please anybody who has/had good and long experience with 2008/2009 Mercedes-Benz B170, B180 Or B200 share me your experience, especially if you have had B-class car that exceeded 120,000 KM.
On the other side share me your experience - if any - about used 2008/2009 Toyota Prius that exceeded 150000 KM.
What do you advise me?

Thanks Ken, and thanks to anybody else in advance.

All cars have problems some more than others of course. I tend to go for the car I like the most with the lowest miles. Remember luck has a lot to do with it I have seen cheap cars go forever and I have seen expensive ones fall apart.
