1986 Mercedes Benz 190d Two Wheel Drive Automatic 250000 miles

i have a 1986 mercedes 190d non turbo 2.5 liter , the tachometer stoped running , checked the wires running into it ,and change tachometer ,still inop...what should i do to pinpoint the origin of this problem ?

if you look at the front of the engine down by the harmonic balancer, you will notice a round pick up sensor. That is operates your tachometer.
