Hi, I'm hoping someone can put me out of my misery here... In February, my car was vibrating, so I was going to get my tires balanced. But I ended up sliding in some ice, and going over a very small curb/divider (front drivers side) getting on to the highway. The steering was all out of whack, and it was doing some extra heavy vibrating, pulling, and the wheel wouldn't come back when I turned. I took it to a local mechanic, who replaced the rack and pinion, lower arm control, did an alignment and balanced the tires. This fixed everything (after a few tries), but the original vibrating from before the accident.

I took it another mechanic, a couple weeks ago, who said the driver side wheel bearing needed to be replaced. So he did that. It still vibrated. Then he said my tires probably needed to be rebalanced. He did that, still vibrating.

I thought maybe the problem was with my after market wheels, so I put my old wheels back on, which I needed to have repaired, and got two new tires. (the front driver side tire was shreaded inside on 3 spots. Other than that my other cheapy tires didn't show any unusual wear.

On my way to replace the tires, I noticed a new vibrating/sound happening only when I was on the highway, when turning my wheel to the left. You know the sound when you sway off the highway a little, and hit those vibrating strips on the shoulder? That's the new sound it makes.

So after all is said and done, after the new tires/wheels (and lots of money) I can still feel the vibrating (I can notice it right away going 15-20) But you can really feel it and see the steering wheel vibrate, and move back and forth driving at 50 mph. The wheels/new tires did slow down the vibration a little. I haven't gotten an alignment in a few months, and it doesn't feel like it's pulling at all. I don't know what else to do. Could the new steering vibration problem be from the wheel bearing? Any other ideas could be causing the other vibrations?

To my knowledge, nobody has ever checked the axles.. or the right hub assembly. And my breaks were replaced this past October.. Is there tests that can be performed that I can check any of this myself? I feel whenever woman ask questions like this to their mechanics, it's always, "yeah you are so right this needs to be replaced, it's gonna cost a bunch"

As for the axles do they click? What you do is come up to a stop and do a turn left and then right seperatly of course. Now when you go to turn give it a little gas like you miss judged the car coming and have to get in a bit do you hear any clicking on take off? Now on the hub assembly that is a bit harder but what you can do is jack the car up and then have a friend help by having them turn the wheel and use either a long screw driver with the screw driver up against the hub and the you hand cupped over the handle and placed against you ear or use an automotive stethiscope. Now have you friend turn the wheel and listen for growling or grinding sounds. Here is a pic of the hub so you can get an idea of where to up the screwdriver or the stethiscope. If you look at the pic all you need to do is put the screwdriver up against this part where ever it is most convient. Let me know what you find.
