2000 Mazda Protege Replacing Water Pump - need assist

To better assist you please tell me if your model is a DX, ES, or LX. Also your engine size in liter…….

Model info: 2000 Mazda Protege DX 1.6 , 4 door

I solved the problem about how to remove the Power Steering pump bracket. The _third_ bolt was hidden under the manifold shroud. Once I removed it, the PS pump could be moved out of the way.

New questions:

The water inlet pipe left behind after I removed the failed water pump (not the lower radiator hose) wiggles and I am concerned that there is some sort of gasket/ (O ring?) that I should inspect/replace. I can not have that connection leak after I put this car back together? How do I remove / inspect this connection? Any diagrams available?

To remove the crankshaft sprocket center bolt (so I can replace the timing belt) the Haynes Repair Manual invites me to remove the flywheel driveplate access cover and wedge a screwdriver inside to prevent the crankshaft from moving during the removal of the crankshaft bolt. But it does not show where this plate is. How to locate? Any diagrams available?

Hello - Well sorry, the manual doesn't provide any pics on this.......I have attached the only thing it gives. WATER PUMP Removal & Installation 1. Drain engine coolant. Disconnect negative battery cable. Position No. 1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke. Remove right side cover and undercover. Remove air intake duct. 2. Remove exhaust manifold heat shield. Remove lower radiator hose from inlet housing. Remove power steering pump with hoses attached, and secure pump away from engine. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT. Remove A/C compressor with hoses attached, and secure aside. Remove A/C bracket from engine. 3. Unbolt water inlet pipe from water pump. Water pump inlet pipe has lower radiator hose and by-pass pipe attached. Remove bolts from water pump. Remove water pump. 4. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE Most setups like this have an O'Ring or something like this........You can check with the dealer parts department and get a parts brake down and the parts. Make sure you put some type of petroleum jelly (I just use Vaseline) around the O'Ring area Look at all ends and replace any gaskets or O Rings or you are right.........it will leak. Sorry you will have to look around at that area to see how to disconnect........some times these just pull apart.......... I have attached the pic with the plate it is talking about. Be careful about the force you put on it so you don't damage the sprocket..............

Hello - Also, it looks like you may have some recalls on your vehicle. The dealer may fix these for free. Please contact the dealer service department, give them the VIN number of your car and have them check on these to see if they apply to you.
