1999 Mazda Protege 4 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 119000 miles

while i drive, my O/D light flashes and then i feel the car give a kick back..as if it jerks back. whats wrong?

That is the PCM telling you it has recorded a failure or other problem in the transmission.Take it to Autozone (they scan for free) and have the PCM scanned, get back to me with the codes
