1996 Mazda Protege Stuck in Park

I can not get the transmission out of park. I drove it and parked it now it will not shift. Can you please help. Is there a Brake on/off fuse for safety? Thanks

Do your brake lights work? Test the brake light switch and there is a solenoid on the shifter that locks it, test it there for power and ground when brake is applied
