The temp guage goes up and the heater temp get hotter only at idle. When I drive it the temp guage goes down all the way and the heater temp goes down. I put in a new thermostat. It doesn't appear to be losing any coolant. Please help. Is it the heater core?

Do you mean to make sure the cooling fan is on at idle? Actually I think the thermostat was bad or it has a problem with the install. It has to be the thermostat. It acts like the coolant is continually flowing.

they come on when engine reaches certain temperature. not always at idle, you can hear them kick in while driving as well.

I have the exact same problem, heats at idle, no heat when moving....
I'm thinking its a clogged heater core...
I see that getting to the heater core is alot of work...
