I have a 2002 Mazda Protege, 2.0ES, manual, with approximately 83K miles on it. I've only had it a year, but it's treated me well so far; but I've noticed that when I drive on the Interstate and get up to right around 78 - 80+ MPH, there is an annoying sort of knocking sound, like maybe two pieces of plastic hitting one another. However, the sound isn't rhythmic, but random, and it goes away when I turn on the cruise control - and the cruise control works fine. I've looked around for possible loose elements and haven't found anything, and I can't exactly tell where it's coming from, but I presume it's near/around the steering wheel area, and it has something to do with the cruise control? I live in a fairly large city and drive every day, but commute about 5 hours to visit home once every few months. I haven't noticed any problems (e.g. the steering wheel shaking) or other troublesome noises, so it's more annoying than anything - but I'd like to get rid of it.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
