ABS OBD1 code

Welcome to 2CarPros.

If the vehicle is newer than 1995, it will be OBD2. Let me know the code. I have manuals that provide codes for all of the components.

Also, to confirm, this is a 323? I will have information on the Protege, which is basically the same vehicle. However, the 323 wasn't offered in the US in 2000.

Hey Joe,

Just to confirm. yes, it's a 323 S BJ (sold in Europe), and manufactured in 2000 with a 17 pin OBD1 in the engine compartment, close to the fuses and battery. :)
In many ways the European 323 BJ is similar to the protege, and in many searches i have had to look up the protege instead of the 323 to find various information and how-to.

The closest engine size I have is a 1.6L. Let me know if you want info from that. If you give me the code you have, I will look it up for you. The code you indicated, 39, doesn't make sense. There is nothing listed for that. Did you use a scanner?

It's likely my fault for putting the question in the wrong spot (on mobile).

Yes, i'd like the information from the 1.6. :)

All i know for certain is my dashboard being lit up with abs, trc, trc off, and the brake, despite having no fluid leaks, and no difference in brake performance (dry as well as wet).
Also knowing which corner to start at means less unnecessary work. :)

I went through the codes and nothing for ABS is two digits. I have a feeling something is different because of the model. What are your thoughts on that?

I got around to figuring out, that i had to short TBS and ground to get the abs related reading, in contrary to using TEN.
I get a reading of 1 long, 3 short that keeps repeating

The only code I'm coming up with for a 13 is with the cruise control circuit. Take a look at the pic I attached.

My 323 doesn't have cruise control, so i doubt that's the one.

However, with a bit of looking around, the exterior of the Protegé LX '99 looks just like my 323, with the exception that my blinker glass is white in the front.
You think there is similarities to be found in regards to error codes, and electronics aswell, regardless of engine size?

Honestly, that is my concern. I suspect there are differences and that is causing confusion.

Djdevon3's obd-1 93-95 guide on mazda626 seems to have relatable information, and an ABS error code list that makes sense, in regards to my error 13.
My obd-i port do have a bunch of blanks, but i'm sure enough it's the mecs-ii FS, European and US mixed for some reason.

I see, my best bet diagnostic wise would be to keep an eye on that guide, i guess.

I came across the 2carpros YouTube video on testing the ABS sensor yesterday, but i've yet to figure out where the sensor is located, as well as the wiring to said connector being tested on.

According to djdevon3's guide, it'd be my rear right - got drum brakes in the rear.
Something you'd know more specifically?

I'll be back with an update, if i manage to find something.

I ended spending half an afternoon getting dirty.
ABS connector is located on the inside, behind the trim, between the seat and back door like the 626 (Protegé as well?), and the drum was pretty straightforward (nicked a bolt keeping abs wire in place, perfect fit for loosening the drum, just like a 2000 Protegé.
I did check the sensor, like in the video you guys made (and mentioned earlier), and i had fine readings - still went ahead and popped the drum, and cleaned a lot of gunk out.
Now, it's a tight fit putting it back together, as the brake shoes are lining up with not much room to spare (wheel does not run free, every rotation or so it gets tight, before and after cleaning).

I'll add a few pictures, to which i hope you can tell if the brake is good or bad (including springs).

Did it take care of the issue?

Afraid not, even with a reset from removing grounding battery cable, it picks up on the error rather quick.

There has to be a wire that is bad.

The error icons do disappear randomly, so i have a single ride once in a while without, before they appear again (or reappear mid ride).
Next thing on my to do list, is opening the drum back up, recheck for gunk, and repeat on the other side.
This time around i'll have some ceramic grease to apply on the inside of the drums, as there's nothing there of any kind - bone dry.

Well, i came to realize how much i need a brake shoe replacement in the left side, but other than that, i just got clean brake drums and shoes, and 2 errors i cannot get rid of (error 13 + 14, both rear ABS), after testing abs sensor on the left as well. :)

I've learned one thing, pulling the grounding cable and draining power from the wiring does nothing in regards to resetting the errors, so i may have no bad parts at all, or 2 ABS sensors gone bad after testing.

I asked in local Mazda groups, and one guy mentioned a separate control box for the ABS, that needs resetting by connecting TBS with ground, turning on the ignition, and pressing the brake pedal 10 times in less than 10 seconds, then removing the connecting wire, and ABS errors should be cleared (still waiting on confirmation, as to ignition being on or off, when the connecting wire gets pulled).

I'll let you know if it works out or not.

i achieved partial success. :)

pressing the brake pedal 10 times in less than 10 seconds did the trick in resetting the errors, while TBS and ground was connected - ignition off, pull the wire out from the obd1 port, ignition back on, error free. :)
until i moved at least..
error 13 came back (rear right), but error 14 (rear left) did not return. :)

i did also notice a big difference in AC when i tested both sides, now that i recall..
i had readings of up to around 0.1 on the left side, when i got it rotating as fast as i could by hand, but was easily achieving 1+ on the right side doing the same..

Do you think a new sensor is going to solve the problem?

Excellent job. It is either a bad sensor, dirt, or the reluctor wheel (aka tone ring). I would remove the sensor and inspect it. If it's clean and there is nothing indicating a problem with the reluctor, then replace the sensor.

Let me know if that fixes it. I'm really interested in knowing.

i used a full 500 ml can of brake cleaner for the inside of the drums, springs, reluctor wheel and everything in between, on both sides while cleaning - there may be residual brake dust again since i have been driving, but aside from that i would say i was very thorough on that day (even the brake shoes got a bit of sandpaper). :)
adding a before and after photo, of the rear left sensor (the good one).

a sensor doesn't cost a whole lot, thankfully, but before i can replace it and give another update, i'll need to have the remaining piece of the bolt extracted, which keeps the sensor in place on the rear right (it broke, bleh!).

been a while, honestly forgot about this :-)
i had my local mechanic drill a hole thru the old bolt, so i could get started - i have been problem free since i replaced the sensor, at least in regards to the abs :)
most wiring also seem to resemble the 95-96 Mazda 626's, while basically being '99 protege lx shells, when it comes to the European 98-00 323's.

So the sensor was the issue?

yup, once that was replaced, the error disappeared - didn't even have to attempt removing error codes.
