Is it possible to replace the coil without replacing the whole unit?

yes you can...is the car not starting? If it is not starting it is usually the ignitghter that is no good(coil attaches to it in the dist) In most cases you will need a coil and an ignighter. These two parts usually cost almost as much as an entire distributor though

Well the car would run in town fine but die on the highway everytime at around 60 mph or if you exelerated to quickly. You could let it sit for a few mins and it would start again. The last time though it didnt start again and I had a buddy tell me his car did the same thing and it wound up being the Ignition coil.

yah that has all the sounds of an igniter and coil set....again I think the cost of a new dristributor is not much more that having the distributor rebuilt...plus the new one (from Mazda) comes with a new cap and rotor
