1993 Mazda MX3 Engine stalls

My Mazda stalls at about 3000 R.P.M while driving and in neutral and then would not start for days until we replaced the coil. Now that the coil has been replaced it starts, but it is still stalling and has this weird odor that comes from the engine right after it stalls. Could you give me an answer as to what is going on with my car?
