Engine Performance problem
1992 Mazda MX3 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

my car did not pass smog. since then I have replaced the catalytic converter and the muffler. the exhoaust pipe between the cat conv and muff, while solid, has alot of carbon build up in it. could this be a reason for it not to pass smog

They should have given you the readings so that you can make corrective measures. What you're doing now is throwing parts to it-the solution here is get the gases read again and go from there. A CEL that is not On during the bulb test or lits up while engine is running will fail the test. Your problem could be coming fom the oxygen sensor/s not adjusting the fuel
