Noises problem
2001 Mazda Miata 4 cyl Manual 72000 miles

Hi,
I recently got my clutch changed after which i heard noises in the car. my mechanic said nothing's wrong, Some transmission fluid spilled when he was chnging the clutch and it is transmission noise, but there is nothing wrong with transmission.
But i am left unsatisfied by his explanation as the noise is becoming unbearable.
1. The noise remains for all speeds. Infact at higher speeds, it seems i am in an airplane instead of a car.
2. The noise completely disappears when i press the clutch.
3. When the car is at halt, the rpm still shows 1000, and there are two sounds i can hear. It seems the engine is resting and starting again after every 5-6 seconds.
4. While driving, whenever the rpm goes below 2000, the noise changes itself to a grinding sound. It seems like something (bearing or something) is loose out there.
Do i need to go to a specialist? Or can the same mechanic do something about it?
Appreciate your help.

Thanks,

Hi Bikash,

Thank you for the donation.

If the mechanic keeps saying there is nothing wrong when you hear abnormal noises, it is time to get a second opinion.

Something is definitely wrong with the trans bearings as the noise disappears when you depress the clutch pedal. Is the noise present when vehicle is not moving and gears in neutral?

A high idling rpm could be due to vacumn leakage and the feeling of the engine resting and starting could be due to surging but the rpm should be moving up and down. Check for dislodged vacumn hoses.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I spoke to a transmission specialist and he told me that while changing the clutch, my mechanic might have messed up a bit and forgotten to put everything in place.

Regarding the noise when car is stopped, i think its the idling noise that keeps changing every 5-6 seconds as i had mentioned earlier (irrespective of whether its in gear or neutral). The rpms does change when this happen but its not substantial (it goes around 100 rpm lower).

Thanks again,
Bikash

Hi Bikash,

You need to check the idling system regarding the irregular idling rpm.

1. Check for vacumn leakages.
2. Clean the throttle body and Idle air control valve.
