Will a bad battery cause No 2 cylinder not to fire? This does not happen all the time.

Remove all the plug wires from the coil and check in the coil (where the wires were) for black soot. If it anything other than clean metal, there may be a faulty coil. Also have your comprseeion checked, as the miata motors were comon for burning valves.
