Electrical problem

I have a 1993 miata. About a month and a half ago I was on fumes and my friend put a half gallon or so of gas from a can that had been sitting in my yard for who knows how long in my gas tank.I started the car and got about 100 feet before it died. I was unable to get it started again. Then I realized that the gas had water in it possibly. It has been a few weeks and I have had several friends look at it .The first person thought it was the fuel pump.When the pump was removed I could see that there was,in fact,water in the gas tank. I have since determined that the pump pumps when hooked up to a different battery but when it is put back in my car it doesn''t get any power. When I turn the key it doesn''t start pumping.Someone else suggested that it might be a relay.Any idea what is wrong with it? I would sure appreciate any suggestions!
