This is the second time the odometer has failed. I bought it used from a "Buy here Pay here Lot" in 2005 (not the smartest move but my credit sucked at the time).

When I bought it it had 158,118 showing. Week later hadn't changed. Dealer told me to get a used one and he would take it off my next payment and install it. Had showing around 43,000 less than the other but it at least worked. Now this one just quit working on Tuesday October 27th. Speedometer stills works.

Any suggestions on why this is happening?

Hi wolfbane45,

Thank you for the donation.

The speedometer an odometer are mechanically driven.

When the odometer does not cumulate, the usual cause is due to the driven gear being dislodged due to wear and is spinning freely on its axis when it should be turning the shaft to cumulate.

Repair is possible but I doubt you would get anyone willing to do it for you.

Such problem do occur for many makes that I have worked on.

So it is best to get a new one instead of trying to repair the old one?

The item is non serviceable by manufacturer's standard and yes, a new one is the best option.

I have a 1996 Mazda B4000 that I bought with the odometer not working. I searched online and found odometergears.com. I bought one of their gears for $25. They explained on their link exactly how to do the replacement. The motor didn't want to come out so I called Jim and he walked me through it. The gear had been changed already with one made in China. It didn't even look like the one from odometergears.com. I installed the one from them, the whole time with Jim on the phone. After getting it back in the truck it works like new!
