I have a 1992 mazda 929, 290k miles. Transmission slips so I'm forced to drive the car in 2nd gear with the Hold button engaged. Also, check engine light is on. Car consumes a lot of oil and smokes occasionally, especially when cranked in the morning. Started car today and the engine idled high/revved for about 5 seconds. What causes this to happen? Also, because of high mileage, I plan to replace the transmission. Would it be wise to replace the engine as well? Would it cost less to have the engine serviced instead of replacing it?
