Two days ago, my car showed the engine/radiator temperature constantly nudging into the "H" zone... I drove for over 40 miles like this... but then took it to a repair shop. He ran a diagnostic test and said that the 'water pump' was leaking. I declined to change it at that time and said I will be back in 2 days to replace it.
However, after I started driving back home from the shop, I noticed the thermostat was 'normal' and pinned at the mid-way level between "C" and "H" (which was really baffling!!!) I drove for over 10 miles on this trip....
My questions:
1. What would be the estimated cost for changing the water pump (including labor etc...). I was told $500 to $600.
2. What if I neglected the leaking water pump and just replaced the coolant/antifreeze at much more frequent intervals (to compensate for the leak...). I drive <8-10 miles a day...
Any pointers would be appreciated....
