I recently replaced my valve cover gasket. I have an oil leak and thought I might as well fix it while I was working on the car. I took off the valve cover and there was black build-up under the cover. I took to the task of scraping it off the best I could, taking care not to let the guck fall into the engine. I thought I had done a good job. But, now when I drive the car, the oil light comes on and it starts ticking real bad. My question is could I have possibly plugged up my oil pump with some of the guck that inevitably did fall down. I have added build-up remover and changed my oil twice, since the gasket replacement. Is that possibly my problem and how hard of a repair is that for me to do myself.

Check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge-could be a weak oil pump/engine bearings/oil galleries/sludge up pick up strainer
