Manual gearbox stuck in third gear

The gearbox is a manual and is stuck in third gear but won't come out of gear but can wriggle the gear stick around. If you try to select another gear the vehicle won't move like its selecting two gears at once. But if you leave it in neutral you can drive the car

check for a worn shifter or shifter in trans out of align, it shold look kind oaf like a square open box. it could also be a broken cable. we don't have that in u.s so no pics available.
