My vehicle has good oil pressure when first started, when it warm up and go driving it drops to 20 lbs or less. Is that bad?

Hi Donnie,

That is usually one of two things. Either the oil you are using is too thin when it warms up or your bearing clearance in the engine is increasing and is a sign that the engine will fail.

I would suggest using an oil additive that will thicken your oil and this should keep your pressure up (like Lucas Oil). However, you need to be mindful to let the engine warm up before driving it. Thickening the oil will increase the potential of wear during a cold start.

There is a chance that the oil pump is failing but this is unlikely if the pressure is good cold but low hot. This is more likely the oil/bearing issue.

Let me know if you have any questions and we can go from there. Thanks
