Loud grinding noice (was told might be transfer case)

When I start driving makes a loud grinding cluncking noise until I reach 40-50 MPH and then it stops. I can drive all day without it happening again unless I put it in park, then I have to start all over again trying to reach 40-50 MPH. ????? please help
