Highway driving when I'm at 2,500 RPMs, usually at about 70 to 80 kph, the engine noise is bearable, though still loud by usual standards.

I'm in Australia, and in most places, the freeway speed is 100 kph, which drives the car to 250 revs. This is where the trouble starts. The engine is loud! It's so loud, i can't hear the radio.

I bought this car recently as a zip around. I don't know if this is normal for this car, which is a 4WD. For context, the engine oil has been changed and i check it regularly.

Should i be concerned?
I sometimes drive my son's Subaru Outback, which is roughly the same age, but it's so silent, I'm jealous!

Not normal. Is it the engine itself or do you hear intake or exhaust noise? From the description it sounds like it could have a bad exhaust on it. Could you make a video of it so we can hear it?

Personally, i think it's the engine itself, but I'm no expert. I will get help to take a video and send it here soon.

i do hope it's nothing serious as i don't want to spend too much on this car.

If it is the engine itself that is that loud inside the car the engine is not going to last long and should be rebuilt or replaced. Only a few internal things could make it that loud and those are all bad, rod noise, main bearings, timing components failing. However, exhaust leaks from a bad manifold or cracked exhaust is something that is reparable for far less money.

I've resolved this. Upon closer inspection, I saw that the rubber linings along the doors and the front bonnet had been removed. I've replaced these and now the sound level within the cabin is back to normal.
thanks for the responses.

Well that is a bit different. Not a normal problem for sure.
