My car is idling badly and shaking. The Error code pointed me to bad timing/chain or bad sensors for the cam or crankshafts. However, I had my chain replaced about 5 years ago or 80,000 miles, I also noticed that my car has been burning oil. I have had 2 mechanics tell me 2 different things. one said a loose or bad timing chain could affect my oil consumption over time and the other said it would not affect it at all. which is correct?

Hi,

The timing components won't cause oil consumption. As far as the condition, what code did you retrieve that led you to the timing chain as the cause?

Let me know.

That makes sense. I attached two pics below with the circuit diagnostics. This eliminates an electrical concern when it indicates a mechanical one.

I forgot to ask before if it has a 4 or 6-cylinder engine. I went with the 4-cylinder 2wd model. Let me know if that is wrong.

Take a look and let me know if that is something you are comfortable performing.

Take care,

Joe

I double checked and it is the same for 2 or 4wd. Keep in mind that P0016 is for the intake camshaft sensor. I feel that if it was the chain, both sensors would be off and a P0017 would also be set.

Let me know what you find or if you have questions.

Take care,

Joe
