1999 Lincoln Town Car Cannot Shift out of Park

Car starts and everything seems normal but you cannot get shift lever out of park position. The Break pedal has been applied before attempting to shift into reverse.

I suspect break sensor on pedal or linkage.

had same problem on 2000 lincoln. it was the sensor near the break pedal. i could get the car out of park if i put the key in and turned it to accesory and then put car in neutral to start. once started i could shift to drive

Read you owner's manual and it will tell you how to shift it out of park. You likely have a light out on the rear or a bad brake light switch.
