last week i turned the knob while driving about 30 mph from a4wd to 4h then to 4l and now the dash indicator shows whichever position the knob is in but the vehicle wont disengage from 4h. i heard a loud thud when this was intiitially done. did i tear up the motor/gear that engages/disengages the 4 wheel drive?

Most likely, they were kind of a problem to begin with. In the future, you should NEVER try for 4lo when moving.

Looks like you just remove the 4 bolts holding it and pull it off. Reverse for install

Have the powertrain scanned for codes, Autozone will do it for free.

1st no you didn't tear up the shift motor.
2nd failing to shift out of 4x4 may have gotten your truck to give up trying to get it out of 4x4, disconnect battery to reset.
3rd 4x4 Low shouldn't engage while moving or in drive if I remember correctly.
4th 4x4 can get stuck especially on dry asphalt. Drive in a strait line for a short distance on a flat surface. (Sand or gravel is best) shift to N take your foot off the break let the truck settle break R let it engage then go back to N flip the 4x4 Sw back to AWD/2WD give it 20 seconds to disengage. If that doesn't do it disconnect the battery start it back up sw to n and give it another 20 seconds. If you were on pavement try again or find some sand... the problem is that resistance you feel cornering makes it hard for it to disengage and the computer will give up to avoid burning up the shift motor. If this doesn't work on sand after 2 tries your probably looking at a mechanical or electrical issues not just stuck.
