Transmission problem V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 130000 miles

Hello,
The transmission won't shift into forward gears. This happened from one start to the next while the vehicle was sitting. The fluid is cherry red, never has slipped or shown any weakness. It drives wonderfully in reverse, but that is not very legal on the highway. I wonder if it might not be the little module (or whatever it's called) that is attached to the linkage on the side of the transmission. is there something I can do to check it out myself, or is there something else it might be? I live in Mexico, and so my options are somewhat limited.

No, no codes have been thrown. This makes me wonder if there might be something physical preventing the lever to shift into forward gears. I have crawled under it and had my wife (with the emergency brake firmly in place and her foot solidly on the brakes) move the shifter through the gears. It slides smoothly into Reverse and Neutral, but refuses to go on into Drive. I cannot see anything abnormal, but I may not know what to look for. Any ideas? Thanks, Brock

P.S. Sorry for the delay in my responses. I do not have internet, and so have to use an IT Cafe whenever I can.

Thank you very much for your time.
Brock

It sounds like a linkage problem if it won't move to drive. Can you disconnect the linkage and try to move it by hand?

If the check engine light had been on what would that mean? And also what if the 4x4 Low Range light is on what does that mean?

The check engine light indicates there is a trouble code stored in the computer. Have the computer scanned to identify what it is. If the low range light, that is to indicate the 4wd system is in low range. If that is the case, the vehicle will only drive aprox 25 miles per hour (top speed). If the engine is reving high at that speed, don't push it. Chances are the actuator is not working properly.

It sounds like there is a bad vehicle speed sensor (VSS). Has the check engine light come on?

It sounds like it could be a input shaft speed sensor. Can you read the codes to confirm. Here is a guide to help you.
