1998 Lincoln Continental
95K miles - fluid is burnt
don't know the level of the fluid
Trans has been slipping
Car has had a burnt smell lately and I planned on having service done but too late

went around sharp 90 degree turn at about 20 mph (turn was to the right).

Car slipped out of gear, had to glide to the side of the road. Shut car off and waited for cool down.

Start car and attempt to select a gear, transmission will not engage any forward or reverse gear.

Dealer wants to replace with a rebuilt for $3500 and provide a 3yr/75K warranty.

I asked to have the trans flushed in hopes that maybe it was a lack of fluid problem and the car was smart enough to disengage before damage occurred - I'm certain this is wishful thinking.

Dealer has replid "the trans won't engage, that means the trans isn't pumping fluid so changing the fluid won't help"

I'm certain this type of thing has happened to others.

Q. What's the flow of diagnosing the problem?
Q. What likely went bad? Is this a typical thing (like going around corner made all the fluid shoot to one side and since it was low you probably blew/burned up the conflagulator and Bunsenator,

Q. is it possible there's a $3-500 fix or is 'the pooch screwed'?

The lincolns seem to be the worst ones for failures from lack of maintenance. You can try to get a used one to save money.
