HAve you checked timing since the change in performance?

Dear Service Writer,
My boyfriend said he wouldn't check the timing because you can't change the timing.
I think this is great that you are using your experience to help people. I wish the car could be repaired. It is taking so many weekends.

I understand that it is computer controlled, but that doesn't mean that something mechanically didn't happen to make the timing go off.

It is provding a clue to what is going on.

IF there is good spark, proper fuel pressure and the compression is right...that leaves timing as a possible issue.

Say for example the timing chain jump a tooth..( I know it was just rebuilt and all), but it is still possible. It could cause this. Maybe the ticking was coming from the timing chain area.

Checked compression again. All cylinders are between 135 and 155 PSI, slightly lower than the initial compression test.Fuel pressure seems OK. I have removed the fuel injectors and checked the valve needle (pintle) on each one. In one, the pintle moves about .015" and in the other one it moves about .003". I think the two injectors should have nearly identical stroke distances. If the injectors fire alternately, that difference would account for the engine running unevenly. I have not found any specification either in the Ford service manual or on the Internet for the correct distance, so I don't know if .015" or .003" is right, or if they're both wrong. I intend to replace both injectors; if one has gone bad there is no telling how long the other one will last.

The only way I could tell on the stroke length is to compare to a new one. I don't have anything on that either. Mitchell1 doesn't offer anything on this car.

Are there any codes?

Using Voltmeter
The service codes can be interpreted using a voltmeter. These codes will appear as a fluctuation of the needle, indicating the first digit of the code, followed by a two second pause, then a second series of pulses indicating the second digit of the code. For example, a code 3-2 would be indicated by three pulses, a two second pause, then two more pulses. If more than one code is indicated, there will be a five second delay between codes.

Using STAR Tester
After connecting STAR tester, the tester will run a display check as follows: The numerals 88 will begin to flash in the display window, followed by a steady 00, which indicates that the tester is ready to start the Self Test and receive service codes.
To receive service codes, press the push button at the front of the tester. The button will latch downward and a colon will appear in the display window in front of the 00 numerals. The colon must be displayed to receive service codes. If the Lo-Bat indicator shows steadily during operation of tester, turn power switch Off and replace the unit's nine volt battery
