1994 Lexus ES 300 75000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
I MADE A $5 donation a couple of minutes ago before entering my question by mistake. I live about 150 miles from a Lexus dealer. I was driving and the check light came on; on the right of the check symbol is the word OFF and below that O/D. It flashes. Can't find that in the manual and am afraid to drive now. This is one owner car, I've kept it maintained. Thank you!

If you have an auto parts store such as Autozone or Advance, they will scan the system for DTC's (diagnostic trouble codes) for free, get the printout, or write the codes down and post them here.

I live rurally; I would have to drive 35 miles to an auto parts store or repair center. Without knowing what "OFF, O/C" means, I do not know if it is safe to drive. I'm trying to understand what that means so I can figure out what to do.

I searched around on the internet and finally figured it out. The Overdrive button was off. I have never used overdrive, must have accidently hit the button. No more flashing "O/D Off" so there was no problem.

I thought the check engine light would go off after a bit, that it was connected somehow to the O/D, since they occurred at the same time, but its still on this a.m.

I'm 60, live alone and really don't want to break down on the way to town. When check engine light comes on does it mean breakdown in emminent or just a warning?

Unknown! That's what the codes are for. You have two choices, drive and take a chance, and two, tow it. It could also be the code set when you drove it with the O/D off, and it might reset itself after a bit. Or since you are on the internet, you can order a generic scanner for your car and have it shipped to you!
