Left Tailight yes brake light no.

Left tail light works perfectly (two bulbs two filaments each just as on right side) but when brake is depressed the extra two filaments on the left tail light remain off while they do light up as usual on the right tail light.

In other words brakes on = left side remains just the two filaments while right side lights all four.

This doesn't seem like a two bulb fix. Unlikely two would fail at once?

Hope I'm wrong?

Have you checked to make sure the bulbs are good? Have you checked the socket to see if there is power to it? Have you checked the condition of the socket?
